Characters Introduced in This Issue:

Cerebro: Although Cerebro is not actually a character, it is a very important part of X-Men lore so I included it here. Cerebro is both Spanish and Portugese for “brain”. Cerebro is a device that Professor X and other telepaths use to find mutants in the world.

Recurring Characters in This Issue: Blob, Magneto, Toad, Mastermind, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman, Jean Grey, Professor X

Synopsis:

In this issue, the X-Men have a graduation ceremony and then Professor announces that he must leave for a while to take care of some things. Before he leaves he appoints Cyclops as the leader of the X-Men.

After the Professor leaves, Cyclops discovers that Magneto is trying to recruit the Blob to join the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and the X-Men go to stop him. After a fierce battle, the X-Men are able to defeat the Brotherhood and the Blob. In a last ditch effort to destroy the X-Men, Magneto sends missiles at all of them, but they hit the Blob instead of the X-Men and the Blob is barely harmed.

Angered at the fact that Magneto turned on him, the Blob returns to the carnival and states that he wants nothing to do with mutants of any kind.

Review:

This issue was a step back in the right direction after last issue’s misstep. I was happy to see that Iceman is finally starting to look less like a snowman, but his transformation is not yet complete.

It was also great to see Cyclops finally becoming the leader of the X-Men since he is the leader of the group for most of their history. It will also be great to see the X-Men continue to battle evil without the help of Professor X. I wonder what he is up to right now. I’m sure there will be a reveal at some point in the future.

Another interesting Cyclops thing that happened in this issue is that Cyclops revealed that he was thinking about trying to find a cure for his mutation. This is a concept that will come back into play once the Apocalypse saga begins.

It’s good to see that Cerebro has been introduced now, but it is strange that Cyclops is able to use it. Eventually only telepaths will be able to use it.

One problem I have with this issue is it continues to show Magneto using telepathic powers which he hopefully won’t have for long.

Also the X-Men have a helicopter? I’m not sure where they keep getting all of these vehicles but I’m ready for them to just use their jet all the time.

Final points:

1. Mastermind continues to hit on Wanda. It seems like every male in X-Men is always in love with every female.

2. There are more and more hints that Jean is interested in Cyclops.

3. Jean teaches Beast some manners, but it seems a bit sexist to me.

  1. Alex Wei says:

Mastermind tends to hit on any woman, perhaps because he isn’t very good looking in real life. You may remember the X-Men graphic novel about the first death of the Phoenix/Jean Grey. He makes himself handsome and with a telepathic device from the White Queen, he makes the Phoenix fall for him. Needless to say, when she gets free she takes violent revenge.

Also, later you mention how impossible it seems that the Prof could pick up a Sentinel’s thoughts. In the same way, how exactly does Cerebro enhance one’s ability to detect mutants?
